Program Introduction
The Master of Public Health (MPH) program prepares professionals to prevent disease and promote health across diverse populations. With a focus on global aging, epidemiological transitions, emerging infectious diseases, and health challenges in increasingly globalized societies, the program emphasizes evidence-based and interdisciplinary approaches.
Students complete a minimum of 30 credits, including core seminars, research training, and coursework across four key domains: Epidemiology and Biostatistics; Health Care Policy and Management; Environmental Health Sciences; and Social and Behavioral Sciences. Practical training covers areas such as statistical analysis, healthcare systems, and occupational health.
Graduates go on to careers in government agencies, international organizations, the pharmaceutical and health-tech industries, or continue their studies at the doctoral level. The program fosters critical skills for roles such as public health specialists, epidemiologists, biostatisticians, and clinical researchers, combining classroom learning with hands-on research under the guidance of faculty in medical science.

What sparked your interest to pursue research in your chosen program?
During my clinical practice encountering many patients with diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and obesity, I developed a strong interest in understanding how lifestyle, environmental, and genetic factors contribute to non-communicable diseases. The experience sparked my curiosity to explore the multi-dimensional determinants of these diseases. This motivation led me to pursue scientific research aimed at uncovering underlying mechanisms, which will eventually aid the development of more effective prevention strategies and public health policies to reduce disease burden and improve population health outcomes.

What kind of research you do currently?
I am currently conducting research in epidemiology, which involves studying how diseases are distributed in populations and the factors that influence their occurrence. My work focuses on examining associations between lifestyle factors, genetic factors, and blood biomarkers with non-communicable diseases such as metabolic syndrome, diabetes mellitus, and cardiovascular diseases. Using large population-based datasets, I apply biostatistical analyses and computational tools such as SPSS, R, and SAS to explore complex interactions and patterns among these factors, aiming to provide a detailed understanding of the determinants and distribution of chronic diseases.
What has been the most memorable research experience in your studies so far?
The most memorable research experience for me has been conducting studies, which involved collection, management and analyses of human data, in the Japanese population. Understanding their unique culture, lifestyle, dietary habits, and disease patterns amazed me. Yet, despite these differences from other populations, non-communicable diseases remain widespread everywhere. Exploring these patterns highlighted the importance of context in epidemiology and deepened my interest in studying the determinants of chronic diseases in different cultural and population settings.
What message would you like to share with someone considering pursuing research at Nagoya University?
I would like to encourage you to embrace curiosity and maintain diverse perspectives. The university is rich in research resources and environment for interdisciplinary collaboration, and atmosphere to advance your research skills. Engaging deeply with research here allows you to investigate complex health issues, understand population-specific patterns, and contribute to meaningful discoveries. My experience has shown that persistence, curiosity, and attitude to learn from different cultures and approaches are key to making the most of this opportunity.
