Program Introduction
Nagoya University’s Graduate Program in Civil and Environmental Engineering equips students with the knowledge and skills to develop sustainable, high-quality infrastructure around the world. Through a diverse and interdisciplinary curriculum, students explore advanced topics in environmental systems, environmental chemistry, urban and transport planning, and infrastructure design. Leadership and communication skills are fostered alongside technical expertise, preparing graduates to propose and implement effective solutions to global challenges. Research-oriented internships and thesis projects provide hands-on experience under the guidance of expert faculty, connecting theory with real-world practice.
This G30 Civil and Environmental Engineering program in the Graduate School of Environmental Studies has strong collaboration with the one in the Graduate School of Engineering. Many of the course activities are shared between these programs.

How to Apply
The Civil and Environmental Engineering Program conducts its first round of admissions in January. A second, rolling admission period may be offered in May, depending on the availability of seats remaining after the first round. The availability of the rolling admission will be announced in mid-April on the G30 Graduate School Admissions page.
Applicants are advised to contact their prospective research supervisor in advance to confirm whether the research group can accommodate an additional graduate student. If you do not receive a timely reply, we recommend contacting another research group.

What sparked your interest to pursue research in your chosen program?
When I first visited Japan in 2023, I was fascinated by how urban infrastructure is planned and organized. In contrast to my hometown, I was able to enjoy safe and pleasant walks. I was also amazed by the efficiency of public transportation and the abundance of parks. This sparked my curiosity about how Japan designs its cities to improve citizens’ quality of life and health. I felt this interest aligned perfectly with my background in sustainable development, and I realized that by studying urban and environmental systems in Japan, I could later apply this knowledge in other contexts and conditions.
What kind of research you do currently?
My research focuses on conducting a material stock and flow analysis of construction materials in Mexico City from 1960 to 2020. I am comparing how material stocks have changed across the different boroughs and how these changes relate to quality of life indicators such as the Human Development Index, GDP, access to public services, and green spaces. The main aim of my research is to understand the role of public infrastructure in shaping human development and sustainability in urban areas.
What has been the most memorable research experience in your studies so far?
Two of the most memorable experiences were the visits of Professors Tomer Fishman and Heinz Schandl, both experts in material flow and stock analysis. They delivered lectures on the importance of measuring material stock in society, which helped me refine my research focus as well as improve my methodology and objectives.
What message would you like to share with someone considering pursuing research at Nagoya University?
I would definitely encourage them to embark on their research journey at Nagoya University. Here, you will not only experience a supportive academic environment and first-class education, but also a diverse cultural setting that allows you to build meaningful friendships and engage in rich cultural and sports activities. At Nagoya University, you will also have the unique opportunity to learn from Japanese engineering and research methodologies at their finest.
