Economics and Business Administration Program
Program Introduction
The Graduate Program in Economics and Business Administration equips students with theoretical and applied knowledge in economics, econometrics, and global business practices to meet the demands of an increasingly globalized world. Taught entirely in English, the program fosters international human resources capable of contributing to global corporations, international organizations, government agencies, and research institutions. In the first year, students build a solid foundation in key subjects such as price theory, income theory, econometrics, financial reporting, and global management. The second year emphasizes applied and interdisciplinary topics, including development economics, international law, and Japanese economic and business systems. Students also engage in research seminars in preparation for their master’s thesis.
Practical exposure is enhanced through joint sessions with industry professionals and opportunities to interact with leading global firms, particularly in Japan’s manufacturing hub. Japanese-language courses are available for those seeking careers in Japan, offering insights into Japanese business culture and job market preparation.

Research Voice
Student from Malaysia
What sparked your interest to pursue research in your chosen program?
I identified a few practice gaps while working as a stock research analyst and wished to learn more about potential solutions that could be offered by academia. Due to the uniqueness of the Japanese stock market, which makes it a natural control group for my proposed studies, I looked to Japan for answers, and Nagoya University’s Graduate School of Economics has one of the most comprehensive faculty lineups that could guide me in my research.

What kind of research you do currently?
My master’s thesis investigates whether the turn-of-the-year abnormality in Malaysian stock returns is driven by portfolio pumping—an illegal practice—or window dressing—a legal but unethical one. While not directly related to my thesis, I have also studied financial reporting extensively, taking advantage of guidance from professors and Nagoya University’s library resources.
What has been the most memorable research experience in your studies so far?
One of my research assignments led me to uncover an accounting error in the computation of earnings per share by several publicly listed companies around the world. The Malaysian companies involved have since rectified their accounts following my complaint to the regulator in my home country. Partly due to this matter, I was interviewed by a Malaysian newspaper and invited to a few job interviews.
What message would you like to share with someone considering pursuing research at Nagoya University?
Considering my previous experience at a university in London that boasts a 70% international student ratio, I can confidently say that Nagoya University’s support for international students is top-notch. While the language barrier remains, especially outside the university, overcoming it will be an achievement to be proud of. My listeners are definitely more interested in my student life in Nagoya than in the UK!
