School of Science
Program Introduction
The Biological Science Program is a collaborative effort by the School of Science and the School of Agricultural Sciences. It aims to nurture future researchers through a comprehensive curriculum that spans both fundamental and applied biological sciences. Students benefit from courses, experiments, and special lectures delivered by distinguished professors from around the world. The core curriculum includes Basic Genetics, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Physiology, Microbiology, and Bio-organic Chemistry. While the School of Science focuses on fundamental biological research, the School of Agricultural Sciences emphasizes biotechnology and applied biosciences. Below, we highlight the distinctive features and opportunities of the Biology Program at the School of Science.
Course Highlights
The program provides a broad scientific foundation while allowing students to explore specialized interests such as marine biology, neuroscience, and genome science. A key feature is hands-on laboratory training: from the second year, students participate in a preliminary lab course followed by a one-month rotation in three different laboratories. This gives them valuable experience with cutting-edge research environments. In the final 1.5 years, students engage in graduation research within the lab of their choice. This practical training prepares students for a wide range of careers—from academic and applied research to roles in medicine, pharmaceuticals, and the food industry. If you are passionate about exploring the science of life and eager to develop your skills through world-class research and education, this may be the ideal program for you!
Why Nagoya University’s G30 Biological Science Program – School of Science?
- Small class sizes (10–15 people) enable close communication between students and professors.
- Unique lab rotation system allows students to experience cutting-edge science in laboratories across different fields and explore their interests before choosing a specialization.

What sparked your interest in the G30 Biological Science program?
I was interested in the Biological Science program because I’ve always had a keen interest in biology, especially its medical aspect. I think biological science is broad enough that I can explore my interests before specializing. I considered Japan because of its good reputation in research and technology; I thought pursuing my degree here would give me better opportunities. In the future, I’d like to do master’s abroad and possibly work in a company or pursue academia. For future students, this program allows you to focus on learning about biology and it supports your research endeavors as you can choose a laboratory to do your project in.

What courses did you take in high school?
In high school, I took:
- IB HL Math AA
- IB HL Biology
- IB HL Chemistry
- IB SL Psychology
- IB SL Mandarin
- IB SL English: Language and Literature
